Supergroups rule. I’m
not talking about
Asia
,
Velvet Revolver
or
Audioslave
. They are bad examples –
terrible ones, forget I even brought them up.
Boomgates
is a prime example of a
good super group; a great example and here’s why.
Firstly, it’s always a bold
statement to imply that the members are ‘super’, or worthy of such a
description. But if you're a fan of
The Twerps
,
Dick Diver
and the big one,
Eddy
Current Supression Ring
, then this is as super as it gets - this is like the
fucking Justice League of bands.
Side A, “Bright Idea”, is a sparkly little pop
song; Brendon yelps his trademark Aussie howls, only this time around, Dick
Diver’s Steph Hughes is echoing in the background with some girly
summer-melodies. The bass-lines are definitely making me want to listen to
The
Go-Betweens
, and the guitars are nice and trashy - just the way I like them.
Side
B, “Cameo”, could possibly be even better. Steph opens up with the lead vocals
for a bit, before Brendon comes in for the chorus. The second verse is great
too; Brendon’s vocals are almost spoken in the style of
Lou Reed
or something.
Except instead of slick New Yorker talk, it's swift Aussie-banter between mates
down the sunny sidewalks of St. Kilda.
All this seven-inch did for me is made
me want to have a copy of their non-existent twelve inch. It will exist some
day, and if the songs are as good as these two, and a little bit more polished, well I’ll be one happy listener. These songs are out through local label R.I.P
Society; I’d get one before they run out, which could be any day now. Godspeed.
