Anthony Hughes- Best Damn EP (2010 EP)

Anthony Hughes' release of The Best Damn EP slots him into a strange place. A little bit boy band member gone solo (think Brian McFadden or Nick Lachey) and a little bit rock ballad (think Shinedown) and you're nearly there. Add a dash of Hughes' small town charm, mix it up with a cheeky grin and you've pretty much got it. There is something entirely likeable about this singer and the EP he has released.

The five tracks all showcase a slightly different side of Hughes. The opening track "About Time," is a gentle introduction and typical of the pop/rock/acoustic ballad which Hughes has made his own. This is followed by the more upbeat "Suburban Boy," the tale of a small town boy coming to the big city. An easy pop song which makes the source of Hughes' charm apparent.

The pop vibe is continued in "Best Damn Wiggle", the song from which the EP draws it's name. Hughes' tongue is firmly in cheek as he outlines the barriers preventing him from indeed becoming the best damn Wiggle. The final two songs, "Lion Heart", and "Phantom Pain"  are a complete change of pace, both are emotionally charged songs detailing the pains of heartbreak.

This EP demonstrates the talent Hughes' has. Both through his entirely approachable lyrics and the way he is able to craft them into songs which either pull your heart strings or have you singing right along. Anthony Hughes is able to create the ever elusive pop song with heart and with the down-to-earth nature of a suburban boy.
