Lyla are a band that come out rocking hard and don't stop until they've worn you out. And this is exactly how they launched the Sitting in the Sun EP on Saturday night at Jive in Adelaide.
While comparisons to Jet or Powderfinger may be considered an insult by some, it's hard to go past the fact that this is the type of music Lyla play - easy-to-digest Aussie rock. They are a party band, who look like they have fun on stage and infect the crowd with their good times party vibe. Their tracks have great hooks, both vocal and guitar, and you can easily see these songs getting stuck in your head.
Lead singer Matthew Minucci has a strong voice and plays the part of front man well, although keys man Stefan Krcmarov has the most energy on stage. In a number of songs Stef jumped on a second drum set up with floors toms, to complement David Mazzarelli on the kit, and together they smashed out some great tracks. Sam Bruno on bass played a solid role in keeping the rhythm tight and driven. With Anthony Callisto also on guitar, you'd think Lyla have the potential to sound like a jumbled brickwall of sound, but in fact the balance of their sound is pretty spot on. The guitars, keys and bass all sit well together and don't clash. I dont think it will take Lyla long to get some serious radio airplay with their music.
The crowd were supportive and getting right into the show. The cover art was projected behing the band and added to one of Lyla's strongest points - their image. The band has the look and feel of a good Aussie rock band while still paying homage to a retro kind of 70s rock feel. Playing a cover of Gossip's Dimestore Diamond somehow made them just seem even more authentic.
Lyla's biggest pitfall is that they don't seem to be doing anything innovative or new, it's pretty much a standard formula rock band. But they are damn good at it, so why mess with a good thing?
Even Lyla's slower songs have an energy about them. Again catchy hooks dominate the songwriting. The band smashed out the last few songs of the set, turning the energy up another notch and really going hell for leather. Launches often bring out the best in a band, and with the Sitting in the Sun EP launch, Lyla totally killed it.
